Local Service Organization of Professional Women Marks Milestone with New Website
4/21/2006

The Renaissance Chapter of The Links, Inc. has worked aggressively to provide high – tech educational computer programs to elementary students in Detroit, Mi. since 1993. Today, they are taking a lesson from their own assignment books, and moving their Chapter into the 21st Century with the launch of their own high-tech, fully integrated online website.

The Renaissance Chapter, based in Southeastern Michigan, is part of The Links, Inc., a 60-year old national and international organization with nearly 11,000 professional women of color, who represent significant influence, power and wealth in their communities. The Links, Inc. is one of the nation’s oldest and largest charitable organizations of women of African descent who are devoted to serving the community.

“We are a very progressive group of hardworking professional women with families,” said Joya Harris-Sherron, President of the Renaissance Chapter. “We are accountable, professional, energetic women linked in friendship devoted to serving the community. The website is a reflection of the creativity and innovation that we are as a Chapter.”

The women of the Renaissance Chapter provide students with educational experiences beyond the normal reading and math remediation programs. They work with the teachers and administrative staff to provide tutoring and daily instruction to strengthen educational skills and mentor students. They create and administer an on-going performing and visual arts program, and offer various opportunities, workshops, and seminars for parents to learn and increase their awareness and involvement in their children’s lives and school.

Assembling, launching, and effectively maintaining an online presence will enhance the non-profit organization’s day-to-day operations of its charitable work and programs providing services to the community and making a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of children.

From its inception, Links Diane Washington and Miriam Muléy, Chair and Co-Chair, respectively, of the Chapter’s Communications and Public Relations Committee, intended to develop a website that provides information to all stakeholders, including the general public, supporters, corporate partners, the media, and Renaissance Chapter members. Ultimately, the goal is to enhance the Chapter’s ability to provide services to the community by utilizing web technology in various areas of its business flow including communication, information-sharing, and data retrieval.

The whole process of completing the initial phase of the website took about a month, notes Link Washington, who points out that the Chapter, “…articulated a clear vision and worked towards it with passion and persistence to accomplish this goal.” The Renaissance Chapter is responsible for the website and will maintain its content. Link Muléy adds, “We are committed to meeting the needs of our various audiences providing them with the highest quality service possible.”
