At a ceremony on Sunday, April 23, 2006 at 2:00 p.m., with corporate leaders such as Lear Corporation, AT&T and a host of local educators, parents, dignitaries, political and community leaders, the Renaissance Chapter will dedicate a second computer lab to Courtis Elementary School in Detroit. In 2004, our chapter provided Courtis with its first computer lab, including 36 top-of-the-line flat screen computers with desks and decorative wall art. In partnership with Lear and AT&T, the Renaissance Chapter has maintained their commitment to improving education for students and for the community.
The new computer lab, dedicated in honor and memory of Link Pauline McKinney Harris, the founder and charter president of the Renaissance Chapter of The Links, Inc., will triple the number of students (and parents) at Courtis who can access this important technology. The facility is intended not only to accommodate more students and parents, but to maintain consistent and customary exposure to computers and the technology that will empower them to achieve more, enhancing the curricula and education at Courtis.
The Renaissance Chapter’s relationship with Courtis School started with a national program of The Links, Inc., “Links to Success”, initially begun in 2001. The Renaissance Chapter recognized that technology and computer literacy is crucial to the success of our children and community and decided to act on that void at Courtis Elementary School. The Chapter’s continued persistence to make a difference, completing and expanding their mission even after national program funding ceased, has made an essential difference in the lives of the Courtis Elementary students and the community.
“It is important for us to live up to our mission, so we encourage other corporations, government and community leaders to join forces with us,” says Joya Harris-Sherron, President of the Renaissance Chapter.
